The affordable and compact Ami has achieved remarkable success in various important markets since its launch last year. With its accessible pricing starting from just £20 per month in the UK, Fiat CEO Olivier François sees great potential in leveraging the Ami’s success to enhance urban mobility, a key focus area for the Fiat brand within the broader Stellantis group. By offering a practical and economical solution, Fiat aims to contribute to improved urban mobility for individuals and communities.
The UK market is set to welcome the arrival of the new Fiat Topolino
The Fiat Topolino, coming to the UK market in 2024, draws inspiration from the iconic Fiat 500 of the past. With a nostalgic design approach, it shares many similarities with the Citroen Ami, showcasing a retro-focused aesthetic. The Topolino pays homage to the original Fiat 500, fondly referred to as the ‘Topolino’ meaning ‘baby mouse,’ which was produced from 1936 to 1955.
According to François, the main hurdle in the discussions with Stellantis partners Citroen and Opel regarding the Topolino has been ensuring the necessary production volumes to proceed with the project. In a positive development, Stellantis has recently announced an additional investment of €300 million (£265 million) for the Kenitra factory in Morocco, where the Ami is manufactured. This investment has the potential to increase the factory’s capacity to around 50,000 quadricycles per year, which could provide the needed production capabilities for the Topolino.
François expressed his ambition for the Topolino to become a significant success, stating:
“If I proceed with it, I want it to be a major hit.”
He emphasized the need to enhance capacity in order to achieve this goal and mentioned ongoing discussions with his colleagues at Citroen and Opel regarding this matter.
The name “Topolino” perfectly suits this compact two-seater EV
Fiat describes the new Topolino as a vehicle that brings a fresh sense of la dolce vita to urban roads, catering to a wide range of customers including young drivers, families, and urban enthusiasts.
Drawing inspiration from the technical specifications of the Citroen Ami and the Opel Rocks-e, the Topolino is expected to offer a maximum range of approximately 46 miles and a top speed of 28mph. These capabilities are made possible by its 5.5kWh battery and an 8bhp electric motor, which provide efficient and reliable performance.
The interior of the Topolino provides ample storage space with 63 litres of capacity. Additionally, Fiat will offer exclusive accessories for the Topolino, including
- a practical rack bag,
- a Bluetooth speaker,
- and versatile seat covers that can also serve as beach towels.
These added features enhance the convenience and customization options for owners.
